How to Measure Windows for Blinds and Shades (Step-by-Step Guide)

Tamika Churchill |

Ordering custom window coverings online is easier than ever — but getting perfect results starts with accurate measurements. Whether you’re choosing blinds, roller shades, or cellular shades, precise measuring ensures your window treatments fit beautifully and operate smoothly.

At One Click Blinds, we make it simple. Follow our step-by-step guide below to measure like a pro — and remember, our design consultants are always available for complimentary assistance.

Step 1: Decide on Your Mount Type

Before you grab your tape measure, decide how you’d like your new blinds or shades to mount:

Inside Mount

Installed inside the window frame for a clean, built-in look.
Best for: modern or minimalist interiors.

  • Measure inside the frame width and height in three places (top, middle, bottom).
  • Record the smallest width and longest height.
  • One Click Blinds will make the proper deductions for a perfect fit.

Outside Mount

Mounted above or outside the frame to cover more area and make windows appear larger.
Best for: shallow windows or when maximum light blocking is desired.

  • Measure the exact area you want to cover.
  • Add at least 2–3 inches to each side for total light control.

Step 2: Gather the Right Tools

All you need is:

  • A steel measuring tape (avoid cloth tapes)
  • A level or straight edge
  • A notepad or smartphone to record dimensions to the nearest ⅛ inch

Step 3: Measure Width and Height

Mount Type

Width (Measure in)

Height (Measure in)

Inside Mount

Top, Middle, Bottom → use smallest width

Left, Center, Right → use longest height

Outside Mount

Total desired coverage + 2–3″ each side

From top of mount to bottom of coverage area

Write down width × height (W × H) for each window — e.g., 36 ⅛″ × 62 ¾″.

Step 4: Consider Obstacles

Check for window cranks, trim, or handles that could interfere with the blind or shade. For inside mounts, ensure you have enough window depth for the chosen product:

  • Cellular Shades: ~1 ½″ minimum depth
  • Roller Shades: ~1 ¼″ minimum depth

You can confirm depth requirements on each product page:

Step 5: Double-Check Everything

Before placing your order, re-measure every window — even if they look identical. A ¼-inch difference can affect fit and performance.

Step 6: Choose Your Custom Product

Once you have your measurements, explore our premium window coverings:

Each product page includes customization options for fabric type, lift style, and motorization.
